Chromatics are one of the most compelling and mysterious bands I know. The now Portland-based trio (which used to be a duo, which used to be a trio, which used to be ... you get the idea) has been working hard on its upcoming LP, In Shining Violence (which will be released on the Troubleman Unlimited imprint, Italians Do It Better later in the summer) ... and man does it sound fantastic.
It'd be easy for me to just say the group's another post-punk act, but that does them no justice. These guys toy around with any sound effect, filter, or technique they can dig up. At times, it's like listening to a dub version of some of the Cure's more etherial tunes, at others, it's like hearing a robotic after-hours disco club, everyone drudging along to the slow, incessant beat, and then, too, it sounds like possessed kraut-rock.
Blows my mind totally. I cannot place where the hell these dudes are coming from, but it's spectacular, and that should be enough.
