A warm and inviting record by French minimalist composer Sylvain Chauveau and his partner Felicia Atkinson.
It sounds like the two of them are sending out an SOS beacon from a drifting life boat in the darkness of the Pacific ocean, with a slight hint of optimism and a mountain of sorrow. Full of blissful tones, lightly plucked guitar, warning signals and garbled transmissions used as vague themes to steer structure in the songs. The French and English vocals sit well with one another and give the record it's mysterious and ethereal nature. I'm later told the record is actually about Cat power. I knew I should have given a damm about those French Lessons.
It's hard to give reference to similar artists as there is very little like it. Remove the warmth and replace with unease and bad sex and you could have Katie Jane Garside and perhaps the spoken word side of Nico sound-tracked by Stars of the Lid and Pan American.
A welcome addition to the relatively new Yndi Halda founded record label 'O Rosa Records'. This is a great starting point also if you're interested in getting into post minimalist records and all other things experimentally related.
