While it is unlikely that the release of this career-encompassing double CD will rocket to the top of the charts, Fad Gadget--Mute's first ever signing--deserve slightly more than the recognition they are generally granted (ie next to none). Essentially the brainchild of keyboardist Frank Tovey, Fad Gadget haunted the periphery of the British electronica scene of the 1980s, managing to emerge with neither the kudos of Cabaret Voltaire nor the sales of the Human League. Though properly extracting Fad Gadget from the dustbin of history would probably necessitate pliers and a blowtorch, this expansive collection is a decent resume of their virtues. Echoes of Tovey's sparse, eccentric electronica can still be heard in records by artists as diverse as Depeche Mode and Luke Haines, and tunes such as "Fireside Favourite" and "For Whom the Bells Toll" retain a gloomy, camp charm in their own right. --Andrew Mueller
