Review by Jason Ankeny
"Get Me" is the center of gravity anchoring the brilliant Where You Been, a lumbering yet lovely widescreen epic that launches J Mascis to new levels of lyricism -- not only does each successive guitar solo top its predecessor in terms of invention, scope, and clarity, but over the course of the song Mascis gradually removes the Halloween mask he's long hidden behind, revealing a fragile humanity wracked by insecurity and doubt. For collectors, the real score on this three-song single is the loud, crunchy rendition of the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Hot Burrito No. 2" -- not only do Mascis' cracked, laconic vocals do Gram Parsons proud, but his guitar ups the ante on the psychedelic twang of the original, reeling off a dive-bombing solo that's the very definition of "cosmic American music."
