Before Mertens' carriere as composer took of, Gust de Meyer worked together with him as producers for the Belgian radio, BRT Radio 2 (Omroep Brabant). Their radio-show, 'Funky Town', inspired these two men to compose and record this album. Although this album is often considered his first, it is not really a Wim Mertens album. This album was more of an experiment in the spirit of similar experiments by Anglo-Saxon minimalistic composers, such as Steve Reich. Mertens' music always stayed related to this minimal and post-modern wave (Reich, Glass, ...), but in the same time, he went a complete other path from this album on. The title, 'For Amusement Only', refers to an indication on many pinball machines to remind players that betting on the outcome of games is illegal.(Jeroen Medaer)
